However, there is a common misconception regarding browser redirects, which we would like to clarify before moving on with this article. A lot of our readers refer to it as AttirerPage “virus” or malware. This is in fact not accurate. AttirerPage (and any other browser redirect) is often confused with viruses, which leads to unnecessary panic and frustration among users. We can assure you that AttirerPage is NOT a virus and has none of the characteristic traits of a malicious program. Malware (read: viruses) such as Trojans or ransomware, are designed with the inherent aim of stealing precious information, damaging your system and/or exploiting it for its resources. browser redirect is only there to produce ads and earn money on them, based on the Pay per click scheme.

“So, it’s not dangerous – that’s a relief”

Not so fast. Yes, we did say it’s not a malicious program, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s a good one either. There are certain risks of keeping AttirerPage on your PC, which involve it exposing you to other harmful things. For example, did you know that browser redirect is notorious for collecting your browser related information? Data that has to do with your surfing preferences, as well as personal information you could have entered on any given site is all being carefully gathered and analyzed, with the intent of producing more user-specific content, tailored to suit your interests. This is only logical, as for the developers it’s nigh important that you click on their ads, because that’s their way of making money. However, things can go south, if those developers choose to sell your personal details on to third parties, who might not exactly have the nicest plans in store for you.

Another aspect to the browser redirect, which should be painted bright red, is the fact that the content of the ads might not always correspond to the things they redirect you to. For example, you see a pop-up, banner or box message informing you about some awesome deal on flight tickets, so you abandon whatever you were doing and click on the deal to check it out. And then all of a sudden you end up on a colorful, epileptic-seizure-inducing website of an online casino. Was it what you were after? Is the flight tickets offer anywhere in sight? No. You end up disappointed, which is actually the lesser of two evils. The same way you were tricked into landing on that casino website you could have been redirected to some malicious site, riddled with viruses of all sorts. Statistically, the largest online threat – ransomware, is often downloaded through malvertisements, so this is definitely something to keep in mind at all times, especially if you have an browser redirect infection.

How to protect yourself in the future

There are several distribution methods for AttirerPage and once you’re aware of them – prevention should be a piece of cake. Sometimes browser redirect is marketed as a browser enhancing tool, allegedly there to help optimize your online experience and making browsing faster and more efficient. As you can see, this has hardly been the case and because most users don’t fall for this – the developers have found their ways around your vigilance. For one, program bundles have shown to be among the most successful techniques in getting people to download potentially unwanted content. When you go to some file sharing website or an open source download platform of sorts and decide to download some freeware, for example, AttirerPage can easily be hidden within it and this will not be disclosed anywhere prior to downloading. You will only find out after you have already installed the software of your choice and are greeted with the cascade of popups upon opening your browser. How to avoid this from happening? Simple. As you open the installation wizard of the said program, note that you can choose between the default and custom/advanced setup options. Always opt for the latter, as this way you will be able to see the bundled in programs (if there are any) and you will also have the possibility of unticking the boxes opposite those unnecessary programs, if you so choose. Thus, you will have denied them access to your system and all will be well.
