The HP Error 49.4c02 fix

A common issue among HP printers is the occurrence of the 49.4c02 error. This error may have several different causes. HP Error 49.4c02 usually occurs when the user attempts to print a PDF file. Sometimes this may happen only once and go away after a restart of the printer. Unfortunately, that’s often not the case – the error may turn out to be a permanent annoyance that needs to be fixed in one way or another. Usually, the main reason for the issue is miscommunication between the computer and the printer. Often a print task is that cannot be completed is stuck in the printer’s queue and that is what’s giving the error. As we already said, the causes for this may vary, thus requiring different fixes. In this article we will give you several possible ways to resolve the nagging problem and hopefully one of them will do the job for you.

Before we get to the actual fix, we advise you to first turning the printer off and unplugging it (both the power and the network cables). Now cancel the print job that’s stuck and try starting your printer back again. If the printer is connected to a network, it might be a bit more difficult to trace down which computer has issued the print job that got stuck. Regardless, you’ll need to find it and cancel the problematic task. Once you do that, see if the printer is giving the error 49.4c02 again and if the problem persists, go ahead and try our suggestions on how to fix it.

Fix 1: Upgrading your printer’s firmware

The firmware of your printer is similar to the OS of your computer – it being out of date could be one of the reasons for the miscommunication between the printer and the system that is issuing the print tasks .

Stage 1

Before you update your printer’s firmware, you’ll need to first return it to its Ready State so that there aren’t any tasks in its queue that may be what’s causing the error’s reappearance.

  1. To do that, you’ll need to access your PC’s Control Panel and go to Devices and Printers (Under Hardware and Sound on Windows 7).  1-12-1
  2. When you get there, right-click on your printing device and select See what’s Printing.3-1
  3. Now, right-click in the window that has opened and choose Cancel All documents.

If your printer is connected to a network, instead of looking for the computer that has issued the stuck print job, you can simply disconnect your printer from the network.

Stage 2

After you’re done with stage 1, restart your printer, without plugging back the network cable. Once you do that, you can move on to the actual Firmware upgrade.

  1. First thing you need to do here is check what’s the Firmware version of your printer. In order to do that, you’ll need to use your printer’s interface to print a Configuration Page. In your printer’s interface navigate to Administration/Navigation/Configuration (depends on the model you’re using). There, you should be able to print a Configuration Page so as to see what’s your Firmware’s version.
  2. After you’ve done this, go to HP’s official drivers support site. In there, enter your printer’s version and then select your operating system’s version.
  3. In the displayed results, go to the Firmware section. If the latest version is newer than that of your current firmware, download the latest update and install it following the prompts. If you need extra instructions concerning the installation, there is a guide for most of HP’s firmware updates.

Hopefully, upgrading your printer’s firmware should prove to be enough to resolve the annoying 49.4c02 error.

Fix 2: Update your drivers

Another possible way to get rid of the nagging issue is to update your drivers to PCL6 – a scripting language that is known to resolve the HP 49.4c02 error.

  1. To download the said driver update, you’ll have to once again go to HP’s official site and enter your device’s model name.
  2. In the next page, expand the driver section and download the latest driver for your printer. Open the installation file you’ve just downloaded and install it following the prompts.
  3. After the process has finished, you may need to restart your PC and printer. Now, you can try and see if the error has been fixed

Fix 3: Printing PDF files as an image

Often the cause for the error might be in the PDF files themselves, since sometimes those tend to contain fonts that may be too sophisticated for your printing device. This could easily be the reason why a certain print task got stuck in your printer’s queue. Therefore, if nothing else has worked so far, you can try and print PDF files as images. This will no require of your printer to recognize the sophisticated fonts and will enable you to freely print those files.

  1. To do that, clear your printer’s queue and restart the device.
  2. Now, open the PDF file you would want to print and in the window with printing options go for the advanced settings button. In there, check the box next to Print as Image and press OK.
  3. After this, you can once again try to print the file, hopefully, without the error occurring this time.
