Top 10 free PDF Readers for Windows

PDF files are extremely widely used. Whether it’s some sort of document, article or a digital book, PDF is often the preferred format for the task. If your work or pastime frequently includes handling PDF files, you might benefit from getting a proper software tool that is specifically designed to open and sometimes edit such documents. Depending on what you are actually looking for, there are a lot of different options when it comes to choosing an appropriate PDF program. Therefore, we have created this article in order to present you with the top 10 free PDF readers (and editors) with a brief review of their features and capabilities so that you can quickly and easily determine which one would best suit your needs. The first half of our suggestions will be focused on software that gives a fair amount of different options, both for reading and editing your documents. In the second half, we will present you with several lighter PDF readers that, above all, are designed to provide you with speed and simplicity, while also being easy on your machine’s CPU and RAM.

Top 10 free PDF readers for Windows

1.  Adobe Acrobat Reader

adobe

Chances are this is the first program that comes to your mind when you think about a PDF reader. There are several reasons for that. First of all Adobe Systems are the actual creators of the PDF format. Their Adobe Acrobat is currently one of the most popular readers out there. The tool itself is not the fastest one out there, but it has a wide variety of neat features. Apart from many options that improve your reading experience such as bookmarks and tabbed interface, there are also editing functions that allow you to directly change the documents within the reader. However, for the extra editing functions you’d have to download plug-ins that are paid. Still, the reader itself is free and gives you more than enough options.

2. Foxit Reader

foxit

Another very popular, heavy-weight PDF reader. Foxit comes packed with several very useful features such as built-in annotation support and the ability to share your PDF files through e-mail and Evernote. Foxit can handle all sorts of PDF documents regardless of how heavy they are. It has several reading modes and many helpful reading functions. Also, it has certain editing capabilities if that’s what you are looking for. The interface of Foxit is ribbon-based, similar to that of Microsoft Word, which makes it feel familiar and easy-to-use. Additionally, there is a Safe Reading mode that provides users with some extra protection against potential malware threats, which is always a good thing. If you want to convert other text files to PDF and vice versa, there are downloadable extensions online that would add this feature to Foxit Reader.

  • When installing Foxit, keep in mind that it has an added toolbar within the setup wizard, so if you do not want that added to your browser, make sure to uncheck it before actually installing the program.

3. XChannge Viewer/Editor

xchange

It’s a faster, lighter Reader in comparison to the previous two. However, it still provides you with quite a few handy features, like the option to insert or extract pages or the tracked comments function. The OCR function is one of the best things about XChange Reader, which allows you to scan printed documents and convert the text in them into an editable format. However, to access any of the functions marked as pro would require of you to buy the paid version of the program.

  • Note that during the installation, you have the option to untick the features that you do not want to install. You might want to customize the installation, since there are quite a few add-ons that not everyone would like to have added to their PC.

4. Nitro PDF Reader

nitro

Similarly to Foxit Reader, Nitro has a similar interface to that of the Microsoft Office programs, which makes it easy and simple to use.

It has a couple of unique features, such as the QuickSign option that enables you to create a digital image of your signature and later add it to your documents. There’s also the highlight option and the ability to add sticky notes. Additionally, you can convert a huge variety of other file formats to PDF and vice versa. With Nitro PDF Reader, you also get the option to extract images from PDF documents, which further adds to the great versatility of this neat software tool. A great choice for anyone who wants to have a powerful PDF tool that has a good variety of additional features.

5. Icecream Ebook Reader

icecream

This trusty ebook can open a variety of different formats including PDF, which makes it a great PDF viewer tool. It’s interface and features are focused on providing the user with the best reading experience. At first, the overall look of the program might seem a bit odd, however, it is quite easy to get used to.

With Icecream you have the ability to manage and add files to your own digital library, turn pages, translate text, add notes, etc. It is easy to use and navigate through the program and you can choose from several different viewing modes. File conversion is also a possible option with Icecream Ebook Reader.

6. Expert Reader

expertpdf

This is a lighter-weight reader, that allows for some great speed, while also providing the user with some basic editing options. It is a balanced alternative between the more robust tools we have already mentioned and the really light programs that we are about to cover next.

Expert Reader has all that you might need for your reading purposes, such as a tabbed interface, bookmark support and pages. Also, as we mentioned, there are even some options for editing like highlighting, sticky notes and digital signatures. If you are looking for a medium type of PDF reader that also has some additional features, Expert Reader is a good and reliable option.

7. Sumatra PDF

sumatra

Now, on to the super light PDF Readers, Sumatra is a tool specifically programmed for providing fast and easy access to PDF files. It lacks any sophisticated features, instead it loads the files pretty much instantaneously. In order to make looking through a document even more efficient and quick, this program has a bunch of key shortcuts, which enables users to quickly find what they are looking for. Additionally, Sumatra can open a number of other file formats, such as DJVU, CBR, MOBI and CHM. It can also open several documents at once in different tabs. This makes it one of the best lighter PDF readers that requires almost no effort from your machine.

8. SlimPDF Reader

slimreader

This is yet another simple and easy to use light-weight reader. Its interface is self-explanatory and the lack of any fancy features makes the program a perfect choice for a dedicated PDF viewer tool. If speed is what you are looking for, this piece of software should do just fine. It also takes up extremely little space on your hard-drive with its 1.43 MB of required storage space. The only actual shortcoming of this program is its inability to look at two different pages in a spread-view mode.

9. Google Chrome

You might be wondering what would a browser be doing in an article about PDF readers. Well, even though Chrome is not a dedicated PDF reader tool, it has an integrated feature that allows users to open this type of files. It is very helpful if you are in a hurry and you do not have an actual reader on your PC. Simply open the PDF file using your Chrome browser and it should be displayed on your screen as a Chrome tab. In order to open the document with your browser, here is what you need to do:

  1. Right-click on the file.
  2. Select Open With.
  3. Click on Choose a default program.
  4. Find Chrome, select it and then click on OK.

And there you have it. Of course, the capabilities of Chrome when it comes to handling PDF files are quite limited, but it is still a very useful feature, especially if you do not feel like installing a dedicated reader tool.

10. Microsoft Edge

Similarly to Chrome, the new Microsoft browser for the latest Windows OS – Win 10, provides the user with the ability to access PDF documents without the need for an actual program for the task. Again, there are not many options to choose from, however, if you are looking for a simple reader that would allow quick access to PDF files, without the need to install any additional software – Microsoft Edge is a perfect choice. What’s even better is the fact that, unlike Chrome, you don’t even need to manually download the browser, since it comes pre-installed with your Windows 10 OS.

How To Disable Windows 10 “Lockscreen”

In this article we will guide you through two possible methods, via which you can fix the issue of disabling your Windows 10 Lock Screen, so that it does not appear when you are trying to login.

The Windows 10 lock screen is a beautiful feature that greets you every time you attempt to either turn on your PC or wake it up from sleep in an attempt to login. The photos in it are updated according to your personal preferences via a feedback system and the images themselves are mesmerizing. However, some users seem to dislike the general login feature and want to have it disabled. If you are one of those users, here we will guide you through two different fixes that will help you remove the lock-screen and go straight to the login screen instead.

How To Disable Windows 10 Lockscreen

Method 1: Using the Local Group Policy Editor

  1. Use the Winkey+R keyboard combination in order to open the Run window.
  2. In the search bar, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
  3. Navigate to the following folder: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
  4. In the right pane, locate and double-click on Do not display Lockscreen.
  5. Enable that setting in order to activate it, which will in turn disable the lock screen. Press OK and exit the Local Group Policy Editor.1
    • Note: This method will not work on systems that have had the Anniversary update installed. Therefore, if you already have the Windows 10 Anniversary update, try out our second method.

Method 2: Rename the Lockscreen application folder

This method will disable the lock screen in all cases except for when you actually start your machine.

  1. Open your Start Menu and click on Computer.
  2. Go to C > Windows > SystemApps.
  3. Locate the folder labeled Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy.
  4. Rename that folder to something like Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy – disabled.2
  5. Now, the Lockscreen app should no longer be able to load from that folder and will in turn be disabled.
  6. If you ever want to re-enable the feature, simply go back to that same folder and rename it back to the way it was – the Lockscreen will be restored.

How to automatically sign in

If you feel comfortable with that, you can set your PC to automatically login so that you won’t even have to click on the Lockscreen, type a password or even click on your account tile at startup. However, know that if you enable this, everyone will have the ability to turn on your PC, so keep this in mind. The following short guide will show you what you need to do:

  1. Once again, use the Winkey+R combination from your keyboard to open Run.
  2. This time, type netplwiz and hit Enter.
  3. In the resulting window, choose the profile that you want to be automatically logged in on startup.
  4. At the top, uncheck the option Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  5. Click on OK.                                                     3

And there you have it solved – next time you turn your PC on, it should automatically load into Windows explorer.

“No Boot Disk Has Been Detected or the Disk Has Failed” Fix

In the guide below you will find four solutions that may help you solve the “No Boot Disk Has Been Detected” or the Disk Has Failed” error message. They have proved as effective to fix that issue and that’s why we decided to share them with you with the hope that you find them helpful too.

Usually, the reason for you to be getting the No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” error message indicates a problem with your computer, which for some reason is unable to detect an Operating System or valid boot information. Actually, this message may by displayed for various reasons:

  • if your computer’s HDD/SSD is not appropriately connected
  • the bootable disk has failed
  • the HDD/SSD that contains the boot information is not on top of the computer’s boot order
  • the drive does not have any boot information.
  • the Operating System has been wiped off, either intentionally or unintentionally

Regardless of the reason, in the guide below you will find some of the most effective methods that may help you solve this error message:

“No Boot Disk Has Been Detected or the Disk Has Failed” Fix

Fix 1: Check if the computer’s HDD/SSD is appropriately connected

If the connection between the computer and its HDD/SSD is not good or has somehow loosened up, your PC won’t be able to retrieve boot information, which is one of the reasons for the “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” error message to appear. To eliminate this possibility, you will need to open your computer’s casing. Be careful if you are going to open your laptop, as it is more delicate. Next, disconnect the drive from the computer, then clean all the connections and ports from dust and dirt and reconnect the drive. Make sure you connect the ports safely and stably, then close the casing and reboot the computer to check if the problem is solved.

Fix 2: Check to see if the drive is failing

Another reason for the error message to appear is that the HDD/SSD is failing. To check if that is causing the problem, connect the HDD/SSD to another computer, which is already booted. If you can access all of its contents successfully, then you can rule out this reason, but if it’s inaccessible, this may indicate that your drive has failed.

Fix 3: Check if the boot disk is at the top of the computer’s boot order

The “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” error message may appear because your PC is trying to boot from another source and is failing to find any boot information instead of booting from the boot disk. To fix that you need to ensure that the boot disk is at the top of your computer’s boot order. To do that, you need to:

  • First, start your computer up.
  • When your computer boots, on the first screen that you see, you will find instructions to press a specific key – in most cases this is DeleteF1or F2. Simply press the specified key and this will open your computer’s BIOS/Setup.
  • When inside the BIOS, find your computer’s boot order/configuration. Usually, the boot order is located under the BIOS’s Boot
  • Next, adjust the boot order, so that the HDD/SSD that is the boot disk is at the top. This will ensure that the computer will first try to retrieve boot information from it before any other sources.
  • Save the changes and Exit the BIOS.

Once you do that, the computer will restart. When the computer tries to boot again, check to see if the issue has been fixed.

Fix 4: Clean install Windows

In case that none of the fixes above work for you, the reason may be that the Operating System and/or the boot information that the boot disk contained was somehow erased. In this event, your best solution to resolve the “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” error message may be to clean install your Windows from scratch. We do need to warn you though, that clean installing your OS will delete all the data stored on the affected computer’s HDD/SSD. However, if nothing else works, it may still be better to have a working computer with no data, than a machine full of data that doesn’t work at all. If you wish, you may give the latest Windows 10 version a try, which you can download and install from here.

How To Resize A Partition

In this article we will discuss resizing system partitions and below is a guide to show you exactly how to do that. This guide will work for all versions of Windows.

Your hard disk is divided into several sections that are treated as individual units and in the world of computing they are referred to as partitions. This is done to improve the efficiency of the respective drive, as the operating system can write and manage information on each of these separate partitions, as though each of them were their own hard drive. However, this does affect the total free space on the drive, which leads us to the subject of this article. Each partition has a given size and when that size proves to be insufficient at a given point in time, you can either try to work your way around that by sacrificing other data and deleting it, or you can try and increase the size of the given partition. You can also shrink them, if you so choose.

Windows has a handy built-in tool for that purpose, which is called a partition manager. Only there is one significant drawback to using it: it will effectively wipe out anything stored on the particular partition you wish to resize. But we have a better fix for this problem that will help you manipulate the size of the partitions without deleting any of the information stored on them. So, with that issue solved, let’s head directly to our fix guide.

How To Resize A Partition

How to resize system partition with PartitionGuru:

  1. First, you will need to download the partition management tool called PartitionGuru. You can do that on their official webpage by clicking here.
    1
  2. Once you’ve downloaded the file, run it to install, after which open the program for use.
    2
  3. Right-click the partition of your choice and select Resize Partition.
  4. In the resulting dialog box, set the new partition size. In essence, this is taking free space from another partition and merging it with the one you, the size of which you wish to increase. Be sure to select “Merge to (desired partition)” from the dropdown menu. Then click Start.
  5. A box will appear, asking if you would like to resize the partition by executing such and such operations immediately. Click Yes.
  6. Wait for the process to finish and when prompted to, click Complete.

Once the process is over, the screen will display the current size of the system partitions. The above actions will not result in data loss and you will be free to use your system as you please.

0xC1900101 – 0x20017 Error Fix

The following guide is aimed at solving Error 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 “We couldn’t install Windows 10” in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

1

Many users have reported experiencing issues with updating to Windows 10 from older versions of the Windows operating system (7, 8 and 8.1). The error code they see is 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 and it is accompanied by a message saying something along the lines of: “The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation”.

The error usually occurs after the update process has seemingly been completed, i.e. it has reached 100%, and your machine attempts to reboot. After a while you will notice that your computer hasn’t actually gotten any closer to restarting and is stuck on the Windows logo screen. This will either be followed by an eventual restart or perhaps by a force shutdown initiated by the impatient user, which upon starting will reveal the said error 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 code. As a result, the user will be left with the version of Windows they tried upgrading from, which can be pretty annoying.

To fix this problem, we’ve assembled a guide with a few possible solutions. Try them out and one of them will have solved the issue with error 0xC1900101 – 0x20017.

0xC1900101 – 0x20017 Error Fix

Fix 1:

  1. Remove any and all external drives from your machine.
  2. Create a Restore Point in the event that something goes wrong. Go to Start and type in “restore point”. Open Create Restore point and wait for it to be created.
  3. Note: this step is optional, so if you don’t feel like you want to do this – just skip to the next step instead. Uninstall your Bluetooth and Wireless Network drivers from the the Control Panel.
  4. Shut down your PC and reboot it with the help of the power button and start repeatedly pressing the F2 button on your keyboard to enter BIOS mode. In there, with the help of the arrow keys go to Advanced -> Wireless. Hit Enter.
  5. You will see the following options: Internal Bluetooth and Internal WLAN. For each of them, hit Enter and select Disable, after this press F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS.

Fix 2:

If you have added RAM to your computer, you might need to temporarily remove it. This may be done differently depending on the brand and model of your computer, so be sure to look this up, before attempting to remove the RAM (unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing). If you don’t have additional RAM, simply disregard this fix.

Fix 3:

After you have completed all of the above, restart your computer and go to C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows. Unless you haven’t deleted the Setup after the unsuccessful upgrade attempt, you should see an executable file titled Setup. Double click in to run. Alternatively, the executable can be found in this location: C:\ESD\Windows

This should be sufficient to successfully install Windows 10 on your PC. Please let us know in the comments if the above was helpful or if you’ve come up with an even better solution yourself!

iOS Software Update Failed Fix

This article is dedicated to the issue of a failed iOS update and contains a guide with a solution for this issue. The guide will work for all Windows versions and all versions of Apple iPhone.

So, once faced with an issue of this sort, where your smartphone refuses to start up as it should, simply head to instructions below and the crisis will be solved in no time. However, iCareFone is also the go-to tool for a variety of other issues, offering a number of different fairly useful features. One of those features is the ad-blocking one, for example. iCareFone is also capable of clearing disk space on your device by deleting junk files and various other unnecessary data. There are two versions of this software: there’s the trial versions, which is free, and the full version is obviously paid.
